Due to the recent increase in cases of invasive meningococcal disease (IMD) among residents of Los Angeles County and Southern California, it is recommended that all gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (MSM) in addition to all persons with HIV infection receive the meningitis vaccine. Outbreaks of serogroup C meningococcal disease among MSM have been reported in communities including New York City, Los Angeles County and Chicago since 2014. The total number of IMD cases in Los Angeles County for 2016 is now 15, eight of whom are MSM*.1

Signs and Symptoms:

Invasive meningococcal disease is caused by the bacterium Neisseria meningitidis, which can affect the bloodstream and lead to meningitis. Infections progress rapidly and can cause brain damage, hearing loss, loss of limbs and death.

Symptoms begin within a few days of exposure, can start with influenza-like (flu-like) symptoms and can progress to include:

• fever
• vomiting
• severe headache
• stiff neck
• confusion
• rash
• sensitivity to light
• muscle pain

How Can You Avoid Meningococcal Disease?

• Vaccination is the best way to prevent this disease.
• Limit activities that spread saliva. For example…

– Don’t share drinks, utensils, food, or toothbrushes.

– Don’t share things you smoke, like cigarettes, e-cigarettes, marijuana joints, cigars, pipes, hookah.

– Don’t have multiple kissing partners.

• Limit close contact with people who are infected.

Who Should Get the Vaccination?

Gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (MSM) may be at increased risk for invasive meningococcal disease, including those who:

• Regularly have close or intimate contact with multiple partners, or who seek partners through the use of online websites or phone digital applications (“apps”).
• Regularly visit crowded venues such as bars, parties, etc.
• Smoke cigarettes, marijuana or illegal drugs, or spend time in smoky settings.

Persons who are HIV-infected are at increased risk of meningococcal disease. Previously vaccinated HIV-infected persons who received only one dose of vaccine should receive a second dose at the earliest opportunity, regardless of the time interval since previous dose. A booster dose should be given every 5 years if the previous dose was administered at less than 7 years of age.
